Lent Day 7 [2.24.2026] Heavenly Things

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. - John 3:17

Scripture: John 3:1-21

Nicodemus was a member of the Jewish ruling council and a well-respected Pharisee who approaches Jesus with curiosity and caution. Despite Pharisaic adversity against Jesus, Nicodemus came to face the truth because the signs were clear that Jesus was not just a religious man. Jesus answers Nicodemus’ curiosity with an impossible truth that to see the Kingdom of God, we need to be born again. Jesus acknowledges the first physical birth that we all share, but the necessary spiritual birth that would come through faith in Jesus Christ. This second birth leads to light just as an infant born sees light for the first time. However, rather than living in light, the world has chosen darkness to keep their deeds hidden.

Today, we want to consider the light that Jesus is calling us into. Verse 14 reminds us of the prophetic event that occurred in Numbers 21:4-9 when the people of Israel were bitten by venomous snakes in response to their grumbling and complaining against Moses and God. God commands Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole and anyone who was bitten could look at it and live. The light refers to the exaltation of Jesus, being physically lifted on a cross to save humanity from sin. Walking into the light means receiving and accepting the truth that God came down to earth to die for us and heal us of our sin; and without Jesus there is no hope. Apart from this truth, we would all perish but rather than let us stand condemned, Jesus provided a new life by giving up His own. The bronze snake was lifted so that all could see and be healed, and our Savior was lifted so all could receive a new life.

1.     Is there a part of our lives that we keep hidden in darkness and shame?

2.     How can we set ourselves free from this sin?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for being the light in this world of darkness. I want to receive and accept your sacrifice and live in truth. Help me to bring every part of my life into light so that I can live in the fullness of salvation each day. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

니고데모는 유대 지도자들의 공회(산헤드린)의 일원이었고, 존경받는 바리새인이었습니다. 그는 예수님을 향한 바리새인들의 반대가 있었음에도, 호기심과 조심스러움을 가지고 예수님께 나아옵니다. 니고데모는 예수님이 단순한 종교인이 아니라는 사실을 분명히 보여 주는 표적들을 보고, 결국 진리를 마주하고자 했습니다.

예수님은 니고데모의 궁금증에 대해, 하나님 나라를 보기 위해서는 반드시 “거듭나야 한다”는 인간에게는 불가능해 보이는 진리로 답하십니다. 예수님은 우리가 모두 경험하는 첫 번째 육체의 출생을 인정하시면서도, 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해 이루어지는 두 번째 ‘영적 출생’이 필요하다고 말씀하십니다. 이 두 번째 탄생은 갓난아이가 처음으로 빛을 보는 것처럼, 우리를 빛 가운데로 이끕니다. 그러나 세상은 빛 가운데 살기보다 자신의 행위를 숨기기 위해 어둠을 선택해 왔습니다.

오늘 우리는 예수님께서 우리를 부르시는 그 빛을 함께 묵상하려 합니다. 14절은 민수기 21:4-9에 나오는 예언적 사건을 떠올리게 합니다. 이스라엘 백성이 모세와 하나님을 원망하고 불평했을 때, 그 결과로 독사에 물려 고통받게 됩니다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 놋뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 달아 높이 들라고 명령하시고, 물린 사람이 그것을 바라보면 살게 하십니다. 여기서 “빛”은 예수님의 높임—곧 인류를 죄에서 구원하시기 위해 십자가 위에 들리신 예수님의 사건—을 가리킵니다.

빛 가운데로 걷는다는 것은, 하나님께서 우리를 위해 땅에 오셔서 죽으심으로 우리의 죄를 치유하셨다는 진리를 받아들이고 인정하는 것입니다. 예수님이 없이는 소망이 없습니다. 이 진리에서 벗어나면 우리는 멸망할 수밖에 없지만, 하나님은 우리를 정죄 가운데 두지 않으시고 예수님께서 자신의 생명을 내어주심으로 우리에게 새 생명을 주셨습니다. 놋뱀이 높이 들려 모든 사람이 보고 치유를 받게 되었듯, 우리의 구주도 높이 들리셔서 누구든지 새 생명을 얻을 수 있도록 하셨습니다.

1.     우리 삶 가운데 어둠과 수치 속에 숨겨 두고 있는 부분이 있나요?

2.     이 죄에서 벗어나 자유함을 얻기 위해 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요?

기도:

사랑의 하나님, 어둠으로 가득한 이 세상에서 빛이 되어 주셔서 감사합니다. 주님의 희생을 믿음으로 받아들이고 진리 가운데 살기 원합니다. 제 삶의 모든 부분을 빛 가운데로 가져와 날마다 구원의 충만함을 누리게 하소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
