Lent Day 40 [04.04.2026] Reinstated

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. - John 21:25

Scripture: John 21:1-25

After Jesus had appeared to His disciples, a few went back to their old way of life. They had disqualified themselves from the resurrected ministry of Jesus Christ considering how they had abandoned Jesus in His darkest hour. Some may have even remained in their disbelief, still unable to comprehend that Jesus truly had come back from the dead. However, while they were fishing, Jesus calls out to them from the shore and with the same miracle He performed to call them disciples the first time, He performs again and immediately the disciples recognize Him from afar. Of the disciples that had returned to their old way of life was Peter. Peter had made bold statements regarding his devotion to Jesus but when the time came, Peter had disowned Jesus three times. There was a conversation Peter was dreading to have with Jesus but in many ways, Peter may have wanted Jesus to accuse him, rebuke him, and even reject him, but Jesus never does. Instead, Jesus only asks Peter this question, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

When someone makes a mistake or wrongs us, we are not curious about their intention. Rather, we want them to explain their behavior, action, and choices. Questions such as, “why did you do that?” or “how could you do that to me?” are appropriate responses but Jesus does not accuse or question Peter about his denial. Instead, Jesus asks Peter if Peter loves Him and does this three times to overcome the three denials that Peter had committed. This means that Jesus met every betrayal of Peter with love. How do we believe Jesus responds when we fail? Many times, we imagine a God who is angry and frustrated with us, but Jesus desires only that we would come to Him. In every appearance, Jesus invites and welcomes them to experience the realness of His resurrection. He does not seek revenge or act in anger, rather He continues to love them and offer Himself to them.

1.     How do our doubts and sins cause us to go back to our old ways?

2.     In moments of disaster, shame, and darkness, what confidence do we have in approaching Jesus?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for this lent season. There were many times even during these past few weeks that I felt weak and fell into the snare of sin. But through it all, thank you for your faithfulness. Teach me to continue to live my life in greater devotion to you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

예수님께서 제자들에게 나타나신 이후, 몇몇 제자들은 다시 이전의 삶으로 돌아갔습니다. 그들은 예수님께서 가장 힘든 순간을 겪으실 때 자신들이 그분을 버렸기 때문에, 부활하신 예수님의 사역에 더 이상 합당하지 않다고 여겼을지도 모릅니다. 어떤 이들은 여전히 예수님의 부활을 완전히 이해하지 못해 의심 가운데 머물러 있었을 수도 있습니다.

그들이 다시 고기를 잡고 있을 때, 예수님께서 해변에서 그들을 부르십니다. 그리고 처음 제자들을 부르실 때 행하셨던 것과 같은 기적을 다시 행하시자, 제자들은 멀리서도 그분이 예수님이심을 알아봅니다.

이전의 삶으로 돌아간 제자들 가운데는 베드로도 있었습니다. 베드로는 예수님을 향한 자신의 헌신에 대해 담대한 고백을 했지만, 결정적인 순간에 세 번이나 예수님을 부인했습니다. 그는 예수님과 나누게 될 대화를 두려워하고 있었을 것입니다. 어쩌면 예수님께서 자신을 책망하시고, 꾸짖으시며, 심지어 거절하시기를 예상했을지도 모릅니다.

그러나 예수님은 그렇게 하지 않으셨습니다. 대신 단 한 가지 질문만을 하십니다.“요한의 아들 시몬아, 네가 이 사람들보다 나를 더 사랑하느냐?”

누군가가 우리에게 잘못을 저지르면, 우리는 그 사람의 마음보다 그 행동을 따져 묻고 싶어합니다.“왜 그렇게 했어?”“어떻게 나한테 그럴 수 있어?”이러한 질문은 자연스러운 반응입니다.

하지만 예수님은 베드로의 행동을 추궁하지 않으십니다. 대신 “네가 나를 사랑하느냐”라고 세 번 물으심으로, 베드로의 세 번의 부인을 사랑으로 회복시키십니다. 이는 예수님께서 베드로의 모든 배신을 사랑으로 맞이하셨다는 것을 의미합니다.

우리가 실패할 때, 예수님은 어떻게 반응하신다고 생각합니까? 우리는 종종 하나님께서 우리에게 화가 나 계시고, 실망하셨다고 생각합니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 우리가 그저 그분께 나아오기를 원하십니다.

예수님은 나타나실 때마다 제자들을 초대하시고, 부활의 실제를 경험하게 하십니다. 그분은 복수하시거나 분노로 행동하지 않으시고, 계속해서 사랑하시며 자신을 내어주십니다.

묵상 질문

1. 우리의 의심과 죄는 어떻게 우리를 다시 옛 삶으로 돌아가게 합니까?

2. 실패와 수치, 어둠의 순간 속에서 우리는 어떤 확신으로 예수님께 나아갈 수 있습니까?

   
   

기도

하나님 아버지, 이 사순절 기간을 허락해 주셔서 감사합니다. 지난 몇 주 동안에도 연약함 가운데 죄의 유혹에 넘어졌던 순간들이 있었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 변함없이 신실하신 주님께 감사드립니다. 제 삶이 더욱 주님께 헌신된 삶이 되도록 인도하여 주옵소서.예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
