Lent Day 6 [2.24.2026] Holy Zeal

His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me." - John 2:17

Scripture: John 2:13-25

The temple of Jerusalem served as the center of worship and sacrifice according to Old Testament laws and traditions. One major festival was known as the Passover which celebrated the final act of God to set the Israelites free from slavery in Egypt. During this time, native and non-native Jews from Judea, Galilee, and surrounding areas would travel to Jerusalem to worship God. This pilgrimage would cause fatigue, and the city would swell meanings rooms would often be unavailable (Jesus’ birth). However, instead of an invitation to worship, weary travelers would be met with the chaos and noise of merchants, selling animals for sacrifice. They would bargain, exploit, and rob people out of their money and desire to worship God. Anyone who brought their own sacrifice would be denied access and forced to purchase another from a vendor. For this reason, Jesus whips them out of the temple court, scatters their coins, and overturns their tables. In doing so, Jesus restores temple worship and fulfills the prophetic words of Psalm 69:9.

Sometimes we find ourselves acting the same way in our modern-day temple. For so many, church becomes about friends and fellowship, events and hype, a social and cultural experience rather than a transformative one. The power and beauty of the church becomes apparent when it provides and encourages weary people to come find rest in the presence of Jesus Christ. Church should be a place of repentance, spiritual encounter, and transformation rather than a hinderance to worship and devotion to God.

The Jews challenged Jesus to show them upon what authority He had done such things. Jesus replies that He will destroy this temple and raise it again in three days. Outraged, the Jews rejected His words, but Jesus was referring to His resurrection through which we would no longer need a physical building to worship, rather Jesus would establish an eternal and universal temple to invite everyone and anyone into His presence.

1.     In what ways do our intentions and reasons for going to church stray away from the right heart?

2.     How can we be true worshippers of Jesus wherever we go?

Dear God, thank you for teaching me that you desire relationship and encounter more than anything. If there are any hinderances and distractions in my heart, please take them away and help me become a true worshipper. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

예루살렘 성전은 구약의 율법과 전통에 따라 예배와 제사의 중심이 되는 곳이었습니다. 그중 하나의 큰 절기는 유월절이었는데, 이는 하나님께서 애굽에서 종살이하던 이스라엘 백성을 해방시키신 마지막 역사를 기념하는 절기였습니다. 이때가 되면 유대와 갈릴리, 그리고 여러 지역에 흩어져 살던 유대인들이 예루살렘으로 올라와 하나님께 예배하였습니다. 이 순례 여정은 피곤함을 동반했고, 도시는 인파로 가득 차 숙소를 구하기 어려울 정도였습니다(예수님의 탄생 때와 같이).

그러나 예배를 향한 초청 대신, 지친 순례자들을 맞이한 것은 제물을 파는 상인들의 소란과 혼잡이었습니다. 그들은 제사용 짐승을 팔며 값을 흥정하고, 사람들을 착취하며, 예배하려는 마음까지 이용했습니다. 자신의 제물을 가져온 사람들조차 거절당하고, 반드시 상인들에게서 다시 사도록 강요받았습니다. 이러한 이유로 예수님께서는 채찍으로 그들을 성전 뜰에서 내쫓으시고, 돈을 흩으시며 상을 엎으셨습니다. 이를 통해 예수님은 성전 예배를 회복시키셨고, 시편 69편 9절의 예언을 성취하셨습니다.

오늘날 우리도 현대의 ‘성전’에서 비슷한 모습을 보일 때가 있습니다. 많은 사람들에게 교회는 친구와의 교제, 행사와 분위기, 사회적·문화적 경험이 되어버리고, 삶을 변화시키는 예배의 자리는 되지 못할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 교회의 참된 능력과 아름다움은 지치고 상한 사람들이 예수 그리스도의 임재 안에서 쉼을 얻도록 돕는 데 있습니다. 교회는 회개와 영적 만남, 변화가 일어나는 장소가 되어야지, 예배와 하나님께 대한 헌신을 방해하는 장소가 되어서는 안 됩니다.

유대인들은 예수님께 이러한 행동을 할 권위가 어디서 왔는지 표적을 보이라고 요구했습니다. 예수님은 “이 성전을 헐라 내가 사흘 동안에 일으키리라”고 대답하셨습니다. 그들은 분노하며 그 말씀을 이해하지 못했지만, 예수님은 자신의 부활을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이었습니다. 예수님의 부활을 통해 우리는 더 이상 물리적인 건물에 의존하지 않고 예배하게 되었으며, 예수님께서 영원하고 보편적인 성전을 세우셔서 누구든지 그분의 임재 안으로 나아올 수 있게 하셨습니다.

1. 우리가 교회에 가는 의도와 이유가 올바른 마음에서 벗어날 때는 언제입니까?

2. 어디에서든지 참된 예배자로 살아가기 위해 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요?

기도:

사랑의 하나님, 하나님께서 관계와 만남을 무엇보다 원하신다는 것을 가르쳐 주셔서 감사합니다. 제 마음 안에 예배를 방해하는 요소와 distractions이 있다면 제거해 주시고, 참된 예배자가 되게 하소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
