Lent Day 5 [2.23.2026] The Best For Last

Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now. - John 2:10

Scripture: John 2:1-12

Wedding banquets were traditionally a public weeklong festivity, typically hosted by the groom. Running out of wine at such an event was not a simple miscalculation but a point of failure and humiliation for the groom, his family, and his marriage in this first-century honor-shame culture. Hospitality was a moral duty and failure to deliver would lead to social fall out and a stained reputation. Understanding this context brings urgency to Mary’s words when she tells Jesus they had run out of wine. Mary knowing what Jesus could do, seeks His help to save the party and protect the bride and groom from public humility. At the end of the story, Jesus turns water into the finest wine that anyone had ever tasted, not only saving the party, but bringing honor to the bride and groom for serving the best for last. Yet, before his first miracle, Jesus responds to Mary’s request seemingly reluctant to perform it. What did Jesus mean when He said His hour had not yet come?

When we connect this moment to the last supper, during which Jesus symbolically presents the wine as His blood, we realize that this miracle means so much more than just saving a party. Jesus presented the best wine to the guests, representing His blood that would be poured out for them while on the cross tasting the bitterness of spoiled wine (vinegar) in our place. When Jesus states that His hour had not yet come, He is referring to the backward timeline of what such a miracle would represent. He had come to provide the sweet taste of life for all only after He had experienced the bitterness of death for all. Jesus’ first miracle was not just to keep the party going, it was the sign that the good news of eternal life had come.

Dear God, thank you for teaching me about the gospel through Jesus’ first miracle. Help me receive the deeper truth of your word today and rejoice in the eternal life you have given me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

결혼 잔치는 전통적으로 일주일 동안 이어지는 공개적인 축제였고, 보통 신랑이 주최했습니다. 이런 자리에서 포도주가 떨어진다는 것은 단순한 계산 실수가 아니라, 1세기 명예-수치 문화 속에서 신랑과 그의 가족, 그리고 결혼 자체에 큰 실패와 수치로 남을 일이었습니다. 당시 환대는 도덕적 의무였기에, 제대로 대접하지 못하면 사회적인 비난과 평판의 손상으로 이어질 수 있었습니다. 이 배경을 알면, 포도주가 떨어졌다고 예수님께 말하는 마리아의 말이 왜 그렇게 절박했는지 이해할 수 있습니다. 마리아는 예수님께서 하실 수 있는 일을 알고 있었기에, 잔치를 살리고 신랑·신부가 공개적인 수치를 당하지 않도록 예수님의 도움을 구합니다. 그리고 이야기의 끝에서 예수님은 물을 그 어떤 사람도 맛보지 못한 최고의 포도주로 바꾸셔서 잔치를 구하실 뿐 아니라, “마지막에 더 좋은 것”을 내어놓음으로 신랑과 신부에게 명예를 더해 주십니다.

하지만 첫 기적을 행하시기 전, 예수님은 마리아의 요청에 대해 마치 주저하시는 듯한 반응을 보이십니다. 예수님께서 “내 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였다”라고 말씀하신 것은 무슨 뜻이었을까요?

이 순간을 최후의 만찬과 연결해 보면, 예수님께서 포도주를 상징적으로 자신의 피로 제시하신 장면을 떠올리게 됩니다. 그러면 이 기적이 단지 잔치를 살리는 일을 넘어, 훨씬 더 깊은 의미를 가진다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 예수님은 손님들에게 가장 좋은 포도주를 주심으로, 십자가에서 우리를 위해 쏟으실 자신의 피를 예표하셨습니다. 동시에 예수님은 우리 대신 상한 포도주(식초)의 쓰디쓴 맛을 십자가에서 맛보셨습니다. 예수님께서 “내 때가 아직 이르지 않았다”라고 하신 것은, 이 기적이 가리키는 의미가 결국 거꾸로 이어지는 시간표—곧 십자가와 부활—를 향하고 있기 때문입니다. 예수님은 모든 사람에게 생명의 달콤함을 주시기 위해, 먼저 모든 사람을 대신하여 죽음의 씁쓸함을 겪으러 오셨습니다. 예수님의 첫 기적은 단지 파티를 계속하게 하려는 일이 아니라, 영원한 생명의 복음이 이미 도래했다는 표적이었습니다.

2.    예수님의 죽음과 부활은 우리가 더 이상 수치, 굴욕, 두려움 속에 살 필요가 없다는 사실을 왜 확증하나요?

사랑의 하나님, 예수님의 첫 기적을 통해 복음을 가르쳐 주셔서 감사합니다. 오늘 말씀 속에 담긴 더 깊은 진리를 받아들이게 하시고, 주께서 주신 영원한 생명을 기뻐하게 하소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
