Lent Day 3 [3.7.2025] / Finding Peace and Tranquility

Scripture: Luke 1:8-25 / 누가복음 1:8-25

John 14:27 -  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Overview:

In Luke 1, an angel of the Lord (Gabriel) appeared to Zechariah and foretold him of the child him and his wife Elizabeth would bear. His name was to be John and will make ready a way for the Lord. Six months after Elizabeth had conceived John through Zechariah, the same angel would appear to Mary and it was then that Jesus was conceived in her womb through the Holy Spirit. Last in the chapter, Mary the mother of Jesus would go into a town in the hill country of Judea to meet Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist. When Mary had greeted Elizabeth, the baby in her womb (John the Baptist) leaped and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She then exclaimed in a loud voice:

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Matthew 3 tells us that John the Baptist was amongst the few who were teaching against the manipulative and religious Pharisees and Sadducees during that time and preaching a message of repentance and transformation. He was a peculiar and powerful prophet whom God built a ministry of confession to make way for Jesus Christ. In this way, after Jesus overcame the wilderness, He would continue the message of John the Baptist which set the stage for Christ’s great purpose to bring salvation into this world.

Make Way for the Lord:

Luke 7:28 records these words of Jesus regarding John the Baptist:

“I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

In this scripture, Jesus is sympathizing with His companion John the Baptist in dealing with such an unruly and unbelieving generation. In this declaration, Jesus proclaims the greatness of John the Baptist amongst all those born into this world in all of history. Yet, we know that the ministry that God completed through him did not consist of any miracles, revolutions, stories of war and the like; instead, John simply proclaimed a message of repentance and baptized those who were willing with water. So, what made John the Baptist so great according to Jesus? It is because John uniquely understood and knew who Jesus is and awaited simply the coming of Jesus Himself. John did not desire the wonders and miracles of what Jesus would do; John simply desired Jesus Christ Himself. Therefore, in His life and in His preaching, in His purpose and in His joy, He made room and prepared a way for Jesus Christ to come and save the world.

According to scripture, we know that John the Baptist was around 6 months older than Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is eternal but in bodily form, was around the same age as His companion. Therefore, what was Jesus doing while John was preaching? The bible does not give us a detailed account of Jesus’ upbringing before His ministry except for a few moments in which He would declare that His time had not yet come. Why doesn’t the bible give us a detailed account of how the most important being in all the universe grew up? While there is not one in all of history and there will be no one in all of existence to match the power, glory, wealth, and wisdom of Jesus Christ, He chose to live in obscurity for thirty years before beginning and ending His ministry in 3. While these 3 years of ministry would change our entire universe, most of Jesus’ life on earth consisted of growing up, honoring His parents, working the family trade, and taking care of His friends and family. His childhood and adulthood are shockingly familiar and yet the great difference is that He was perfect in it. It is as if His life before ministry speaks volumes to the importance of leading a quiet life.

Moreover, when Jesus arrives at the scene where John had been baptizing those who would repent before God, he baptizes Jesus and then retreats into obscurity. At this point John had amassed many followers but in John 1:35-46, we see him pointing everyone to leave him and follow Jesus for He is the Lamb of God. John is soon put into prison and then beheaded at the pleasure of Herod. It would seem such an insignificant, powerless, and unfitting way to die for such a great man as Jesus would declare him to be.

So many times, we walk this life like the unruly and unbelieving generation of Jesus’ time. We are trained and conditioned to measure our worth based on looks and our identity based on feeling. We strive after success because it is how we define purpose, and we hope for wealth and fame because that is how we measure our influence. We even compare ourselves to one another to reassure ourselves that we are not behind or even that we are ahead and better than others. Sometimes even in our faith, we take pride in the wrong things. We try to be impressive in what we do, perfect in every way, and boast in how passionate and holy we are before other people. Jesus declares a blessing not for the pharisee who prays in the courtyard for all to see, but for the humble who closes the door to their room and prays. Jesus does not declare a blessing to the rich who throw large amounts into the offering basket but to the poor widow who gives out of her poverty and offers two small copper coins.

We hope that you would receive the greatest miracle this lent season to its fullest extent. The greatest miracle is not a sign, not riches, not success, but it is simply and powerfully to know and receive Jesus Christ Himself. Therefore, to know you are forgiven, to know you are not alone, to know that the Holy Spirit lives within you, and to know that you have an inseparatable, guaranteed, and everlasting relationship with God marks the success of this lent season. And the way to receive this amazing gift is to lead a quiet life of secret prayer and unseen disciplines that are personal between you and God.

Prayer:

1. Lord, teach me how to lead a quiet and powerful life that does not strive for worldly vanity but true faith and deep devotion.

2. Holy Spirit, help me to lead a prayerful life that is personal to my relationship with you.

3. Lord, teach me to understand the depth of your love for me and receive You as the greatest gift of lent.

   
   

개요:

누가복음 1장에서 주의 천사(가브리엘)가 사가랴에게 나타나 그와 그의 아내 엘리사벳이 아이를 갖게 될 것이라고 예언합니다. 그 아이의 이름은 요한이며, 주님을 맞이할 길을 준비하는 자가 될 것입니다. 엘리사벳이 요한을 잉태한 지 여섯 달 후, 같은 천사가 마리아에게 나타나 성령을 통해 예수님을 잉태하게 하셨습니다.

이후 마리아는 유대 산지의 한 마을로 가서 요한의 어머니 엘리사벳을 만납니다. 마리아가 엘리사벳에게 인사하자, 엘리사벳의 태중에 있던 아기(세례 요한)가 기뻐 뛰놀았고, 엘리사벳은 성령으로 충만해져 큰 소리로 외쳤습니다.

큰 소리로 불러 이르되 여자 중에 네가 복이 있으며 네 태중의 아이도 복이 있도다. 내 주의 어머니가 내게 나아오니 이 어찌 된 일인가. 보라 네 문안하는 소리가 내 귀에 들릴 때에 아이가 내 복중에서 기쁨으로 뛰놀았도다. 주께서 하신 말씀이 반드시 이루어지리라고 믿은 그 여자에게 복이 있도다.

마태복음 3장에서는 세례 요한이 당시 종교적 위선과 교만에 빠져 있던 바리새인과 사두개인들에게 강력하게 경고하며, 회개와 변화의 메시지를 전하고 있었음을 기록하고 있습니다. 요한은 독특하고 강력한 선지자로서 하나님께서 예수님을 위한 길을 준비하는 사역을 맡기신 자였습니다. 이후 예수님께서 광야에서 시험을 이기신 후, 요한이 전했던 메시지를 이어받아 온 세상에 구원을 전하는 사역을 시작하셨습니다.

주님을 위한 길을 예비하라:

누가복음 7:28에서 예수님께서는 세례 요한에 대해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

“내가 너희에게 말하노니 여자가 낳은 자 중에 세례 요한보다 큰 이가 없도다. 그러나 하나님의 나라에서는 극히 작은 자라도 그보다 크니라.”

예수님께서는 믿음 없고 완악한 세대 속에서 함께 사역한 세례 요한을 위로하며, 그가 역사 속에서 가장 위대한 인물 중 하나임을 선언하셨습니다. 하지만 요한의 사역에는 기적도, 혁명도, 전쟁 이야기조차도 없었습니다. 그는 단순히 회개의 메시지를 전하고 물로 세례를 베푸는 사역을 했을 뿐이었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 예수님께서는 요한이 가장 위대한 자라고 하셨습니다.

그 이유는 무엇일까요?그것은 요한이 누구보다도 예수님을 깊이 알고 그분의 오심을 간절히 기다렸기 때문입니다. 요한은 예수님의 기적이나 능력이 아니라, 예수님 그분 자체를 간절히 사모했던 사람이었습니다. 그의 삶과 사역, 목적과 기쁨은 오직 예수님을 위해 길을 예비하는 것이었습니다.

성경에 따르면, 세례 요한은 예수님보다 약 6개월 먼저 태어났습니다. 육신으로는 거의 동갑이었지만, 예수님께서는 사역을 시작하시기 전까지 30년간 거의 세상의 이목에서 벗어난 조용한 삶을 사셨습니다.

우리는 종종 예수님의 어린 시절과 청년 시절에 대한 기록이 거의 없는 이유를 궁금해합니다. 왜 성경은 가장 중요한 존재인 예수님의 성장 과정을 자세히 기록하지 않았을까요?

이는 조용한 삶의 중요성을 강조하기 위해서일 것입니다. 예수님은 온 우주의 왕이시지만, 공생애를 시작하시기 전까지는 평범한 삶을 살며 부모님을 공경하고, 가족을 돌보고, 나사렛에서 목수로서 일을 하셨습니다. 세상적으로 보면 그분의 삶은 평범했지만, 그분은 그 안에서 완전한 순종과 거룩함을 이루셨습니다.

그리고 마침내 예수님께서 세례 요한이 사역하던 곳에 나타나셨을 때, 요한은 자신의 제자들과 군중들에게 예수님을 따르라고 외쳤습니다.그는 이미 많은 추종자들을 모았음에도 불구하고, 스스로 주목받는 것을 거부하고 오직 예수님을 높였습니다.

“보라, 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이로다!” (요한복음 1:29)

이후 요한은 감옥에 갇히고, 결국 헤롯 왕의 명령으로 처형당했습니다. 그의 죽음은 세상의 관점에서 볼 때 초라하고 비극적으로 보일 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 요한을 가리켜 “여자가 낳은 자 중에 가장 큰 자”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

참된 기적:

오늘날 우리는 세상의 기준에 따라 자신의 가치를 평가하는 경향이 있습니다. 우리는 외모와 사회적 지위로 자신의 가치를 결정합니다. 성공과 부를 이루어야 의미 있는 삶을 살았다고 생각합니다. 심지어 신앙 안에서도 남들보다 더 거룩하고 열정적으로 보이려 노력할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 외적으로 화려한 삶이 아니라 겸손한 삶, 숨겨진 기도의 삶, 조용한 헌신의 삶을 축복하십니다. 예수님은 거리에서 큰 소리로 기도하는 바리새인이 아니라, 골방에서 조용히 기도하는 자에게 복을 선언하셨습니다. 많은 재산을 헌금한 부자가 아니라, 두 렙돈을 드린 가난한 과부를 칭찬하셨습니다.

사순절을 맞아 우리가 받아야 할 가장 큰 기적은 무엇일까요? 그것은 바로 예수님 그분을 아는 것, 예수님을 영접하는 것, 그리고 그분과 함께 살아가는 것입니다. 그러므로, 내가 용서받았음을 확신하는 것, 하나님께서 나를 혼자 내버려 두지 않으심을 믿는 것, 성령께서 내 안에 거하심을 깨닫는 것, 그리고 하나님과 영원한 관계를 맺고 있음을 확신하는 것이야말로 이 사순절의 가장 큰 성공입니다. 그리고 이 기적을 받는 가장 좋은 방법은 세상의 기준이 아닌 하나님과의 조용한 만남을 추구하는 삶입니다. 이 사순절 기간 동안, 예수님을 깊이 만나고, 조용한 기도의 삶 속에서 주님과 더욱 가까워지기를 바랍니다.

기도:

1. 주님, 세상의 헛된 영광을 좇는 것이 아니라, 진정한 믿음과 깊은 헌신으로 조용하면서도 강력한 삶을 살아가는 법을 가르쳐 주소서.

2. 성령님, 저의 기도 생활이 온전히 주님과의 개인적인 관계 속에서 이루어지도록 도와주소서.

3. 주님, 저를 향한 주님의 사랑의 깊이를 깨닫고, 이번 사순절의 가장 큰 선물로서 주님을 온전히 받아들이도록 가르쳐 주소서.
