Lent Day 26 [03.19.2026] A Fabricated Cause

He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. - John 11:51-52

Scripture: John 11:45-57

The news of Lazarus’ resurrection spread quickly and many Jews who came to visit Mary and Martha believed in Jesus Christ; however, some told the Pharisees what had happened leading to an urgent meeting of the Sanhedrin or the highest Jewish ruling counsel. During this meeting, the chief priests and Pharisees begin to discuss their motive behind arresting Jesus, claiming that it is better for one man to die than the entire Jewish nation to become obnoxious to the Romans and suffer the consequences. Their political motive was further intensified by Caiaphas’ prophecy that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation and unite the people of God. So from that day, they plotted not only to arrest Jesus, but to take His life.

Did Jesus seek to begin a rebellion or did members of the Jewish society fabricate this political motive ultimately leading to Jesus’ death? Many members of the Jewish society believed that Jesus would lead a revolt against the Romans and establish the Jewish nation again, but Jesus had no such intention. Moreover, when standing trial, the Roman authorities knew little about Jesus and found Him innocent on all accounts. Jesus did not stand as a threat to Roman authority, nor did the Romans view Jesus in this way. However, from the Jewish ambition mixed with the political motive of the people and the fear of Roman authorities, the Jewish leaders plot for the removal of Jesus Christ. Their underlying motives included maintaining their leadership, their peace with Rome, and the religious laws of Moses. They would lose all this as more and more people believed in Jesus and listened to His teachings. Their true goal was not to save the people, but to maintain their authority over the people that was supported by the Romans. Already in their hearts, they removed Jesus for the sake of their own ambitions and fabricated a story of rebellion that did not exist.

As we walk in our faith, there are times where we begin to confuse motives, and these errant motives lead us to sin even when we have the best intentions in our hearts. We are called to examine our actions, words, and thoughts not on the results but on the foundation of Jesus’ words. When we make decisions based on a heart filled with ambition and gripped with fear, we choose to walk on a twisted path; however, when we trust in Jesus’ words, He makes our path straight and leads us to life.

Dear God, thank you for teaching me about the deeper motives behind your arrest and ultimately your crucifixion. Help me to examine my motives and passions to ensure they align with yours. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

예수께서 정말로 반란을 일으키려 하셨을까요? 아니면 유대 사회의 지도자들이 정치적인 명분을 조작하여 결국 예수의 죽음으로 이어지게 만든 것일까요? 많은 유대인들은 예수가 로마에 대항하는 혁명을 일으키고 유대 왕국을 다시 세울 것이라 기대했지만, 예수께는 그런 의도가 없었습니다. 또한 재판 과정에서 로마 당국은 예수에 대해 잘 알지 못했고, 모든 혐의에 대해 무죄로 판단했습니다. 예수는 로마에 위협이 되는 존재가 아니었고, 로마 역시 그를 그렇게 보지 않았습니다.

그러나 유대 지도자들은 사람들의 야망, 정치적 계산, 그리고 로마에 대한 두려움이 뒤섞인 가운데 예수를 제거하려는 계획을 세웠습니다. 그들의 진짜 목적은 백성을 보호하는 것이 아니라, 로마의 지원 아래 유지되던 자신의 권위와 지위를 지키는 것이었습니다. 이미 그들의 마음속에서는 예수를 제거하기로 결정했고, 존재하지도 않는 반란의 명분을 만들어냈습니다.

우리의 신앙 여정 속에서도 우리는 종종 동기를 혼동할 때가 있습니다. 이러한 잘못된 동기는 좋은 의도를 가지고 있음에도 불구하고 죄로 이어질 수 있습니다. 우리는 결과가 아니라 예수님의 말씀 위에 우리의 행동, 말, 생각의 기초를 두어야 합니다. 야망과 두려움에 사로잡힌 마음으로 결정을 내릴 때 우리는 왜곡된 길을 걷게 됩니다. 그러나 예수님의 말씀을 신뢰할 때, 주님은 우리의 길을 곧게 하시고 생명의 길로 인도하십니다.

2.     어떻게 우리의 열정과 동기를 예수님과 일치시킬 수 있을까요?

하나님 아버지, 예수님의 체포와 십자가 뒤에 숨겨진 더 깊은 동기를 깨닫게 해주셔서 감사합니다. 저의 마음과 열정을 돌아보며, 그것이 주님의 뜻과 일치하도록 도와주세요. 예수님의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
