Lent Day 2 [2.19.2026] Love in Logos

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14

Scripture: John 1:6-18

The official story begins with John the Baptist who had testified concerning the coming of the Messiah as a witness of the true light that would become the salvation of the world (Isaiah 40:3-5). The light represents freedom from darkness, transitioning from spiritual blindness to spiritual sight, leading John to progress this logic to claim that those who received the light became fundamentally transformed from children born of natural descent to children of God. The life we had lived before the light was illegitimate and spiritually unclaimed, but to those who have received the truth, we become legitimate children of God and spiritually claimed by our Father in Heaven.

Who is this light? We know that this light is the very Word of God, the distinct, begotten nature and identity of God Himself: Jesus Christ. This is who John the Baptist spoke of, and this is who Jesus Christ declared Himself to be; ‘When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life (John 8:12).”’ The Word of God through which all things came to be is Jesus Christ and that Word became woven into flesh and bone to bear our image. This miracle is known as the incarnation. Jesus Christ who is fully God, would also become fully man and fulfill the name Emmanuel which means “God with us.”

One biblical stream through which we see the absolute love of God is His desire to be with His people. Despite being singularly holy, all powerful, and glorious, God has devised a wondrous solution to dwell amongst us. The Fall leads Adam and Eve into hiding when God was walking in the garden during the cool of day. He was not walking in the garden urgently or suddenly, but as He always had. He called on Moses to lead the Israelites in making the tabernacle, which would shelter the inner room or the inner most holy place where the very presence of God would rest over the ark of the covenant. God instructs Solomon to build a temple, God leads Ezra, Zerubbabel, and Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem. All of these key moments in history reveal God’s heart and desire to draw near to His people.

Jesus Christ represents that heart and answers the question of why God would want to be with us. Was it to judge us? Was it to cause us fear or pain? No, for Jesus declares that He has not come amongst us to condemn but to save. The Old Testament was God over there, the gospels was God right here, and now with the Holy Spirit, it is God in our hearts. When sin destroyed the image of God in us, God gave His own to restore and redeem His presence in us. There is no obstacle, no separation, that keeps us from knowing and experiencing God deeply today. The purpose of His plan was to make a way, not only for us to be with Him, but for Him to be with us.

Prayer:

God, thank you for revealing the miracle of the incarnation that shows your absolute love through the great sacrifice and truth of the incarnation. Not only did you make yourself like us, you came to show us love and grace to claim us as children of God. Help me to live my life as a witness to all of your great work and purpose in and through me. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

공식적인 이야기는 세상의 구원이 되실 참 빛에 대해 증언했던 세례 요한으로부터 시작됩니다(이사야 40:3-5). 이 빛은 어둠으로부터의 자유를 의미하며, 영적인 눈멀음에서 영적인 시야로의 전환을 뜻합니다. 요한은 이 논리를 발전시켜, 그 빛을 영접한 자들은 단순한 혈통으로 태어난 자녀에서 하나님께로부터 난 하나님의 자녀로 근본적으로 변화된다고 선포합니다. 우리가 빛을 알기 전에 살았던 삶은 정당하지 못하고 영적으로 주인 없는 삶이었지만, 진리를 영접한 자들은 하나님의 합당한 자녀가 되어 하늘 아버지께 속한 존재로 인정받게 됩니다.

그렇다면 이 빛은 누구입니까? 이 빛은 곧 하나님의 말씀, 곧 하나님 자신의 독생하신 본질과 정체성이신 예수 그리스도이십니다. 세례 요한이 증언한 분이 바로 이분이며, 예수님께서도 스스로 이렇게 선언하셨습니다.“예수께서 또 말씀하여 이르시되 나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요한복음 8:12).

만물이 그로 말미암아 지음을 받았던 하나님의 말씀은 곧 예수 그리스도이시며, 그 말씀이 육신이 되어 우리의 형상을 입으셨습니다. 이 기적을 우리는 ‘성육신’이라 부릅니다. 온전히 하나님이신 예수 그리스도께서 또한 온전히 사람이 되셔서 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다”는 뜻의 임마누엘이라는 이름을 성취하셨습니다.

하나님의 절대적인 사랑을 보여 주는 성경의 한 줄기는 하나님께서 자신의 백성과 함께 거하시기를 원하신다는 사실입니다. 하나님은 홀로 거룩하시고 전능하시며 영광스러우시지만, 우리 가운데 거하시기 위한 놀라운 길을 마련하셨습니다. 타락 이후 아담과 하와는 하나님께서 날이 서늘할 때 동산을 거니실 때에 숨었습니다. 하나님은 급하게 혹은 갑자기 동산을 거니신 것이 아니라, 언제나 그러셨던 것처럼 거니셨습니다. 하나님은 모세를 부르셔서 이스라엘 백성에게 성막을 짓게 하셨고, 그 성막 안 지성소에는 언약궤 위에 하나님의 임재가 머물렀습니다. 하나님은 솔로몬에게 성전을 건축하게 하셨고, 에스라와 스룹바벨, 느헤미야를 통해 예루살렘을 재건하게 하셨습니다. 이 모든 역사적 순간들은 하나님께서 자신의 백성에게 가까이 나아오고자 하시는 마음을 보여 줍니다.

예수 그리스도는 바로 그 하나님의 마음을 나타내시며, 왜 하나님께서 우리와 함께하시기를 원하시는지에 대한 답이 되십니다. 하나님이 우리와 함께하시려는 이유가 우리를 심판하기 위함이었을까요? 두려움이나 고통을 주기 위함이었을까요? 아닙니다. 예수님은 우리를 정죄하러 오신 것이 아니라 구원하시기 위해 오셨다고 선포하셨습니다. 구약은 “저기 계신 하나님”이었다면, 복음서는 “여기 오신 하나님”이며, 이제 성령을 통해서는 “우리 마음 안에 계신 하나님”입니다. 죄가 우리 안에 있는 하나님의 형상을 무너뜨렸을 때, 하나님은 자신의 형상을 내어 주셔서 우리 안에 그 임재를 회복하시고 구속하셨습니다. 오늘날 우리가 하나님을 깊이 알고 경험하는 데 방해가 되는 어떤 장애물이나 분리도 없습니다. 하나님의 계획의 목적은 우리가 그분과 함께하도록 길을 여시는 것뿐 아니라, 그분께서 우리와 함께하시도록 길을 여시는 것이었습니다.

1.     나는 언제 하나님과 멀리 떨어져 있다고 느끼는가?

2.     임마누엘의 진리가 이러한 감정을 어떻게 이길 수 있는가?

기도:하나님, 성육신의 기적을 통해 당신의 절대적인 사랑과 위대한 희생을 드러내 주셔서 감사합니다. 우리와 같이 되셨을 뿐만 아니라, 우리를 하나님의 자녀로 삼으시기 위해 사랑과 은혜를 보여 주셨습니다. 제 삶이 주님의 크신 역사와 목적을 증언하는 삶이 되게 하시고, 저를 통해 이루실 모든 일을 위해 저를 사용하여 주옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
