Lent Day 15 [3.6.2026] Jesus Provides

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." - John 6:12

Scripture: John 6:1-15

So often we examine the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand through a physical lens but the abundance that Jesus provides the multitudes has a spiritual significance as well. At the time of the miracle, the Jewish Passover Festival was near. Recalling that the Passover was the final plague God sent over Egypt, Jesus purposefully shows the physical representation of the spiritual abundance that would soon take place. During the Passover, God had struck down all the firstborn in Egypt including the livestock. The Israelites were commanded to take a year-old male lamb without defect and slaughter it, spilling its blood over the sides and tops of the door of their home. In the same night, they were told to eat meat roasted over the fire and bread without yeast. They were to eat this meal with their cloak tucked into their belt, sandals on their feet, and a staff in their hand. On that night, God passed through Egypt and struck down every first born of both people and livestock but the homes with the blood over the door post were spared or passed over. That night there was great wailing in Egypt and the Israelites were urgently set free from the chains of slavery.

When Jesus looked up and saw the great crowd, He asks Philip where they should buy bread for all of these people. Philip replies that it would take more than a half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite. Jesus took the small offering of the boy who had five loaves of bread and two small fish and after giving thanks, distributed it to all the people. Afterwards, they had twelve baskets of bread leftover. In memory of the Passover, Jesus reminds us that He is the lamb that is to be sacrificed and when we paint His blood over the doorpost of our lives, God’s judgment will pass over us. Jesus would be the one-year old lamb to be sacrificed to provide freedom from the bondage of sin and death to all who would believe. Just like there were twelve baskets with bread left over, Jesus’ body and sacrifice is sufficient to provide life to all.

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for providing blessings and abundance in my life. I believe that the blood you shed on the cross is the only saving grace and that it is sufficient to cover me from death. I believe that by the cross and by your resurrection, you have provided eternal freedom and hope. Help me to believe in your faithfulness in all circumstances of my life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

우리는 종종 오천 명을 먹이신 예수님의 이야기를 ‘육신의 필요’라는 관점에서만 바라보지만, 예수님께서 무리에게 베푸신 풍성함에는 영적인 의미도 담겨 있습니다. 이 기적이 일어날 당시 유대인의 유월절이 가까웠습니다. 유월절이 애굽에 임한 마지막 재앙—하나님께서 애굽의 장자를 치신 사건—을 기념하는 절기였음을 떠올려 보면, 예수님께서는 앞으로 이루실 영적 풍성함을 눈에 보이는 방식으로 보여 주고 계심을 알 수 있습니다.

유월절 밤, 하나님께서는 애굽의 모든 처음 난 것(사람과 가축)을 치셨습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성은 흠 없는 일 년 된 수컷 어린양을 잡아 그 피를 집 문설주 좌우와 상인방에 바르라는 명령을 받았습니다. 그날 밤 그들은 불에 구운 고기와 누룩 없는 빵을 먹되, 허리에 띠를 띠고 발에 신을 신고 손에 지팡이를 든 채로—곧 떠날 준비가 된 모습으로—먹어야 했습니다. 하나님께서 애굽을 지나실 때 문설주에 피가 있는 집은 심판이 “넘어가(유월)” 보호를 받았습니다. 그 밤 애굽에는 큰 통곡이 있었고, 이스라엘은 노예의 사슬에서 급히 해방되었습니다.

예수님께서 큰 무리를 보시고 빌립에게 “이 사람들에게 먹을 빵을 어디서 사겠느냐?”라고 물으십니다. 빌립은 각 사람에게 한 입씩만 주어도 반 년 치 품삯으로도 부족하다고 답합니다. 그때 예수님은 한 아이가 가진 작은 헌물—떡 다섯 개와 작은 물고기 두 마리—을 받으시고 감사기도 하신 후 사람들에게 나누어 주셨습니다. 그리고 모두 배불리 먹고도 떡 조각이 열두 바구니나 남았습니다.

유월절의 기억 속에서 예수님은 우리에게 자신이 희생될 어린양이심을 깨닫게 하십니다. 우리가 예수님의 피를 우리 삶의 ‘문설주’에 바른다는 것은, 그분을 믿음으로 영접하여 그분의 구속을 내 삶에 적용하는 것입니다. 그러면 하나님의 심판은 우리를 “넘어가”게 됩니다. 예수님은 죄와 죽음의 속박에서 우리를 자유케 하시기 위해 희생되실 참된 어린양이 되셨습니다. 또한 열두 바구니가 남았던 것처럼, 예수님의 몸과 희생은 모든 믿는 자에게 생명을 주기에 충분하고도 넘칩니다.

1.     예수님께서 내 삶에 공급해 주셨던 것은 어떤 것들이 있나요?

2.     그 축복들은 예수님께서 주신 참된 선물인 ‘구원’으로 어떻게 나를 이끌고 있나요?

기도:

하나님, 제 삶에 복과 풍성함을 공급해 주셔서 감사합니다. 십자가에서 흘리신 주님의 피만이 유일한 구원의 은혜이며, 죽음에서 저를 덮기에 충분하다고 믿습니다. 십자가와 부활로 주님께서 영원한 자유와 소망을 마련하셨음을 믿습니다. 제 삶의 모든 상황 속에서 주님의 신실하심을 믿게 도와주세요. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
