Lent Day 15 [3.21.2025] / True Treasure Pt. 2

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 / 마태복음 6:19-24

Matthew 13:44 - The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Overview:

When we establish Jesus Christ as our treasure, what does He fill our hearts and lives with? Jesus teaches us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven rather than on earth. When we hold onto Jesus as our true treasure, He faithfully places in our lives that which is heavenly rather than what is earthly. The things of heaven are everlasting, immune, and guaranteed by God’s authority while the things on earth are exposed to decay and spoil and unprotected against thieves and disaster. In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus presents a parable to a crowd who had gathered around Him. In this parable, there is a man who yielded an abundant harvest and thought to save the surplus but lacked room for storage. So, he decided to tear down the barns he currently had to make room for bigger ones and create enough room to store the excess grain. He was overjoyed at this thought because he had enough grain to last him many years during which he would take life easy, eat plentifully, and drink merrily. However, while the world would envy his success, God declared him a fool because unbeknownst to everyone, this man’s life was to be taken from him that very night. What good would come of all the grain he had stored up in the barns? Instead, this man would go empty handed before God with no treasures awaiting Him in heaven.

This parable was a response to a certain individual in the crowd that was with Jesus who had asked Jesus to command his brother to divide their father’s inheritance between them. To this, Jesus responds with the teaching that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions, and we are to be on guard against all kinds of greed. We are to be rich towards God rather than rich in this world. Therefore, what does God consider a rich life and how are we to fill our hearts with treasures of heaven?

The Richest Life:

The richest life is the one that knows Christ the closest. If Jesus Christ is truly our treasure, then our lives should be wealthy with experiences, habits, testimonies, and truth that outline His love, His grace, and His glory in our lives. Why should we love our neighbors, pray for those who persecute us, live generously, walk in obedience to God, and follow Jesus Christ? Why should we be baptized, why should we fast, why should we evangelize, why should we suffer, why should we sacrifice? When we fill our hearts with the same choices that Christ made for us, we learn not just with our minds, but with our bodies, our souls, and our hearts the true nature and message of the gospel. The love God declares over us begins to become so real with every moment of sacrifice and the grace of Jesus Christ becomes ever present in our lives when we forgive our enemies. So many Christians sing and talk about God’s love, but until we have walked in the choices He has made on our behalf, we will never really understand that gift. The true treasure of this life is to know the depth of His eternal love for us and to do so we are to surrender everything that distracts us and keeps us from living the kind of life He lived for us. This type of living yields heavenly treasure that is ultimately defined by knowing Christ so deeply that one day you would stand before Him and greet Him like an old friend whom you have awaited and yearned to meet again.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for teaching me how I should fill my heart with heavenly treasures.

2. Jesus, you are my true treasure. Help my heart be filled with experiences, thoughts, and feelings that take the shape of your grace and love for me.

3. Holy Spirit, help me to live for the riches of heaven and not for the riches of this world.

예수 그리스도를 우리의 보물로 삼을 때,  우리의 마음과 삶을 무엇으로 채우십니까? 예수님은 우리에게 땅이 아닌 하늘에 보물을 쌓으라고 가르치십니다. 우리가 예수님을 참된 보물로 삼을 때, 그분은 우리 삶에 영원한 것, 하나님의 권위 아래 보호받는 하늘의 것을 채워 주십니다. 반면, 이 세상의 것은 썩고 사라지며 도둑과 재난에 의해 빼앗길 위험이 있습니다.

누가복음 12:16-21에서 예수님은 한 무리를 향해 비유를 말씀하셨습니다. 한 부자가 풍성한 수확을 거두었으나 저장할 곳이 부족했습니다. 그는 현재의 창고를 헐고 더 큰 창고를 지어 거기에 곡식을 보관하기로 했습니다. 그는 이를 통해 오랜 기간 풍요롭게 살며 즐길 수 있으리라 기뻐했습니다. 세상의 기준으로 보면 성공한 삶이지만, 하나님은 그를 어리석은 자라고 하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 그날 밤, 그의 생명이 거두어질 것이었기 때문입니다. 그렇게 되면 그가 쌓아둔 곡식이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 결국 그는 하나님 앞에 빈손으로 서게 될 것이었습니다.

이 비유는 무리 중 한 사람이 예수님께 자신의 형제에게 유산을 나누어 주라고 명령해 달라고 요청한 것에서 대답이었습니다. 예수님은 사람의 생명이 소유의 풍부함에 있지 않으며, 모든 탐심을 경계하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러므로 우리는 이 세상의 부자가 되기보다 하나님께 부요한 자가 되어야 합니다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 보시는 ‘부유한 삶’이란 무엇이며, 어떻게 우리의 마음을 하늘의 보물로 채울 수 있을까요?

가장 부유한 삶:가장 부유한 삶은 예수 그리스도를 가장 가까이 아는 삶입니다. 예수님이 진정 우리의 보물이라면, 우리의 삶은 그분의 사랑과 은혜, 영광을 담은 경험, 습관, 간증, 그리고 진리로 가득 차 있어야 합니다. 우리는 왜 이웃을 사랑하고, 우리를 박해하는 자를 위해 기도하며, 관대하게 살고, 하나님의 뜻에 순종하고, 예수님을 따르며 살아야 할까요? 왜 세례를 받고, 금식하고, 복음을 전하며, 고난을 겪고, 희생해야 할까요? 우리가 예수님께서 우리를 위해 선택하셨던 삶을 스스로 살아갈 때, 우리는 단순히 머리로 이해하는 것이 아니라, 몸과 영혼과 마음으로 복음의 참된 본질을 배우게 됩니다.

많은 그리스도인이 하나님의 사랑을 노래하고 말하지만, 우리가 그분이 우리를 위해 선택하신 삶을 직접 걸어보지 않는다면, 그 사랑을 온전히 이해할 수 없습니다. 이 삶의 가장 큰 보물은 그분의 사랑이 얼마나 깊고 영원한지를 아는 것입니다. 이를 위해 우리는 우리를 방해하는 것들을 내려놓고, 예수님께서 우리를 위해 사셨던 삶을 살아가야 합니다. 이와 같은 삶은 하늘의 보물을 쌓는 것이며, 결국 우리가 예수님을 깊이 아는 삶을 살았기에, 그분 앞에 설 때 오랜 친구를 만나는 것처럼 기쁨과 설렘으로 맞이하게 될 것입니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 저에게 마음을 하늘의 보물로 채우는 법을 가르쳐 주셔서 감사합니다.

2. 예수님, 당신이 저의 참된 보물입니다. 제 마음이 당신의 은혜와 사랑을 닮은 경험과 생각, 감정으로 가득 차게 해 주세요.

3. 성령님, 제가 이 세상의 부요함이 아닌 하늘의 부요함을 위해 살아가도록 도와주세요.
