Scripture: Matthew 28:1-10 /

Matthew 28:6 - He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
Matthew 28:6 - He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Overview:

As we await the resurrection of our Savior, we are deeply moved to know that the entirety of our faith rests on what will take place tomorrow. Tomorrow, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary would visit the grave of Jesus when they were met with a violent earthquake and an angel of the Lord who rolled the stone back from the mouth of the cave and sat on top of it. The guards were afraid and became paralyzed with fear as the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.” And as they were hurrying away from the tomb filled with terror and joy, Jesus met them. Upon greeting them, they clasped His feet and worshipped Him.

The Foundation of Faith:

The foundation of our faith rests upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without the resurrection, death would have the final word over our lives and despite repenting, we would still stumble in our despair and hopelessness. However, He has overcome the grave and death itself, that in believing in Him we can receive the gift of eternal life through the power and authority of Jesus Christ. Upon the resurrection, we know that His promises, His purpose, and His presence are forever true and guaranteed.

The Revelation of the Resurrection:

Over the next forty days, Jesus would reveal Himself to His disciples and followers. Some had gone back to fishing, others were still mourning, and yet others doubted; but in each interaction, Jesus appeared to them in the same way He had done before: with love, compassion, and provision. When they saw Jesus, they were all filled with awe as the hope of Jesus Christ came flooding into their mind and hearts. What they saw had changed their life forever. Historical accounts show that many of such believers were martyred for their faith. Some were crucified, others beheaded, still others stoned and tortured all because they knew that this life had become only a platform and preparation for the true glory that they had seen in the resurrected Christ. In this way, the resurrection restored in them a life they never had and turned the tables to realize how insignificant and short our time here on earth really is compared to the meaning of the resurrection, but therefore also deeply realizing that the only significance of our lives now is to live every moment for Jesus Christ.

The Resurrection Changes Everything:

The resurrection of Jesus Christ changes everything. From how we are to live to what we are to live for, from who we were to who we are now, from death to life, the resurrection guarantees what the world can never give: eternal life. When we had once lived in despair and bitterness amid an unjust world, the resurrection of Jesus Christ gives us hope to know that our suffering is never pointless, our lives have meaning and purpose, and death is not the end. If the resurrection is real, our lives are simply the Holy Saturday before the Resurrection Sunday; this time we have on earth is simply a preparation for the eternal life we will have with Him. In this life, we will suffer deeply, mourn for those we love dearly, weep in heartbreak, and face dark times, but all of that is okay because our Savior has risen from the grave. What He has done throughout scriptures He is doing today in our hearts and in our midst because the grave has been emptied, He is no longer there, but has overcome death and darkness so that in Christ you and I can experience the sheer power and freedom of His resurrection. Through Christ, we have the ultimate victory over all things because Jesus came back from the dead. He is not there in the grave; He has risen.

Prayer:

  1. God, thank you for sending Your one and only Son to overcome my despair and death.

  2. Jesus, thank you for your resurrection that shows me You have the ultimate power over sin and death.

  3. Holy Spirit, help me to receive powerfully and totally the power of the resurrection in my life.
