Lent Day 14 [3.5.2026] Moses the Accuser

I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish - the very works that I am doing - testify that the Father has sent me. - John 5:36

Scripture: John 5:31-47

Jesus declares that His testimony is not self-professed or self-proclaimed; rather, His identity and purpose has been sufficiently announced and claimed by John the Baptist and by God the Father. John the Baptist announced the arrival of the Son of God and God the Father identifies His Son at the moment of Jesus’ baptism. Not only this, but those who had studied the Scriptures and accepted them in their hearts would know that the Scriptures testify of Jesus, but many have refused to believe. Jesus did not call them into belief simply by His own words, but by the words of others who have declared Him to be the Messiah. To those who have refused to believe, Jesus claims that their accuser is Moses. Many believed they were already saved because they were Jews by blood. The Old Testament identifies them as God’s chosen people, but the purpose was never to exclude others. God created the Israelites to show the world His identity, power, and mercy; however, they believed that salvation was for them and the laws of Moses would be their key to eternal life with God. Jesus claims that rather than their savior, Moses would be their accuser since the words and laws that God had given to Moses testify and point to Jesus the Messiah. For the Jew, disbelief in Jesus Christ was not due to a lack of education or evidence, rather it was disobedience and refusal.

1.     When was there a time I did something knowing it was a sin/disobedience?

2.     Why couldn’t or didn’t I stop myself?

3.     How can I live in full acceptance and practice of my faith in Jesus Christ in the face of temptation and sin?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you that you are the Messiah. There are times in my weakness and temptation that I fail to do what is right but help me get back up and live a life free from sin. The law of Moses shows my sin, but in Christ Jesus there is no condemnation. Thank you for your cross and forgiveness. Help me leave my life of sin and follow after you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

예수님은 자신의 증언이 스스로 만들어 낸 자기 주장이나 자의적인 선언이 아니라고 말씀하십니다. 오히려 예수님의 정체성과 사명은 세례 요한과 하나님 아버지께서 충분히 선포하시고 확증하셨습니다. 세례 요한은 하나님의 아들의 오심을 알렸고, 하나님 아버지께서는 예수님의 침례(세례) 받으실 때 그 아들이심을 분명히 하셨습니다.

뿐만 아니라, 성경을 연구하고 그 말씀을 마음에 받아들인 사람이라면 성경이 예수님을 증언하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 많은 이들이 믿기를 거절했습니다. 예수님은 단지 자신의 말씀만으로 믿으라고 요구하신 것이 아니라, 이미 예수님을 메시아로 선포해 온 다른 증언들을 통해 믿음으로 초대하셨습니다.

그럼에도 믿지 않기로 한 사람들에게 예수님은 “너희를 고발할 자가 모세”라고 말씀하십니다. 많은 유대인들은 자신들이 혈통으로 유대인이기 때문에 이미 구원받았다고 여겼습니다. 구약은 그들을 하나님의 택하신 백성으로 말하지만, 그 목적은 다른 이들을 배제하기 위함이 결코 아니었습니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘을 통해 자신의 성품과 능력과 자비를 온 세상에 드러내고자 하셨습니다. 그러나 그들은 구원이 자신들에게만 속한 것이라 여기며, 모세의 율법이 하나님과의 영원한 생명에 이르는 열쇠라고 믿었습니다.

예수님은 오히려 모세가 그들의 “구원자”가 아니라 “고발자”가 될 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 주신 말씀과 율법은 결국 메시아이신 예수님을 증언하고 그분께로 향하게 하기 때문입니다. 유대인들의 불신은 지식이나 증거의 부족이 아니라, 불순종과 완고한 거절에서 비롯된 것이었습니다.

묵상 질문

1.     죄/불순종인 줄 알면서도 행동했던 적은 언제였나요?

2.     왜 나는 그때 멈추지 못했을까요?

3.     유혹과 죄 앞에서, 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 온전히 받아들이고 실천하며 살기 위해 나는 어떻게 해야 할까요?

기도:

하나님, 당신이 메시아이심을 감사합니다. 제 연약함과 유혹 가운데서 옳은 일을 하지 못할 때가 있지만, 다시 일어나 죄에서 자유한 삶을 살도록 도와주세요. 모세의 율법은 제 죄를 드러내지만, 그리스도 예수 안에는 정죄함이 없음을 믿습니다. 십자가와 용서를 주셔서 감사합니다. 죄의 삶을 떠나 주님을 따르도록 도와주세요. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
