Lent Day 14 [3.20.2025] / True Treasure Pt. 1

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 / 마태복음 6:19-24

Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Overview:

We receive the gift of salvation by submitting ourselves to the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. In this way, we are born again in His Spirit that we would be called children of God. Not only does our sense of belonging change, but our identity and fundamental core of who we are is transformed. Through Adam and Eve, we were once born into sin. Regardless of how well we lived this life, we were born under the condition of spiritual heartbreak and brokenness. In other words, we could have lived our lives to perfection, but our inherited sinful nature would still condemn us to hell. And due to this sinful nature, we were inclined to think and act in darkness, in fear, and in hopelessness from the beginning because we were once ruled by death; however, when Jesus Christ paid the debt of sin on our behalf through the cross, our sinful nature was erased and replaced by His righteousness. Now, through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and the everlasting love of our Father in Heaven, we draw closer to home with each passing day under the promise of eternity in paradise.

How do I know I have received salvation?

At some point beyond the spiritual high and emotional catharsis we experience at retreats or revivals, answering this question is the key to pursuing your faith in all circumstances. Our faith is not defined by the level of outward expression but rather by the inward transformation. Mind you, outward expression is not false or vain; in fact, it serves to release love, joy and freedom before God, inspire others into passion, and establish true fellowship through vulnerable, unhinged, and radical worship; however, if these are all done without true inward transformation, our outward expression becomes a form of idolatry, showmanship, and conceit. Therefore, the spiritual integrity that we ought to strive for is not to build our faith on what other people can see and judge, but to build our faith based on being right before God and submitting to His transformative work in our hearts and minds each day.

True salvation at work in your life is marked by an aversion to sin and a desire for holiness. When we receive salvation, it promises us eternal life by erasing our original sin or sinful nature, how? By rebirthing us into a new identity as Jesus explains in His conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:1-21). When we are born in the spirit, we belong to God and are submitting ourselves to His Fatherhood. Therefore, we are to learn, be disciplined, and grow in maturity according to the teachings, the character, and influence of Jesus Christ in our lives. This does not mean that when we receive salvation, that our sinful habits, our broken ways, and our short-comings or lacking disappear; it means that God changes our core identity so that sin becomes foreign, and holiness becomes home.

In our scripture, Jesus first warns us against storing up treasures on earth and encourages us instead to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven. This is not a call for you to empty out your savings accounts and piggy banks, nor is it a call for you to shy away from opportunity and success; however, this is a call for us to assess the quality of our hearts based on what our treasure is. 

Recently, my wife and I have been doing quite a bit of traveling, sometimes for ministry and sometimes for leisure. All this traveling concerned me at first because in the past, I was prone to feeling homesick. The unfamiliar environments, foods, cultures, and peoples always had its toll on my thoughts and emotions. No matter how amazing the view, how gourmet the food, or exciting the company, I would always find myself longing for home. Yet, as our season of traveling is temporarily ending, I was surprised that I did not feel homesick at all. What changed? When I was younger, my home was the place where my bed was, where my computer was, where my friends were, where my bathroom was, but now my home as I have come to realize is wherever my wife is. Think about this: Is my marriage real because of the ring, or is my marriage real because of the dress my wife wore or the tuxedo that I had put on? Is my marriage real because of how long we dated or how great the wedding food was? Is my marriage real because of how great the wedding photos turned out to be and how many people attended? No, my marriage is real because my heart changed, and in every changing season and circumstance, in seasons of lacking or in seasons of abundance, when everything is working out or nothing is working out, I know my home is where she is. This does not mean I am anything close to being a perfect husband, but I know my marriage is real because I will never stop trying to be. How do I know that I have truly received salvation or more than that, how do I know I have truly received Jesus Christ? The answer is: when Christ becomes your home. When I am with Him I feel complete and when I am not I feel sick.

When we follow the wrong signals, we get lost in the wilderness of pride and doubt. For some, our faith is based on spiritual highs and emotional moments, and for others, on how perfect and successful we are. For the former, the devil has no problem giving us good times and success so long as it keeps us away from truly surrendering to God. For the latter, you will doubt salvation because you can never be perfect enough to achieve the holiness that God demands. Both provide no evidence that salvation is truly at work in your life because the work of salvation is evident only when Jesus Christ is enough for you. Do not waste your life on anything or anyone else less than Christ Himself. Set your heart on Him again and ask the Holy Spirit to teach your heart to be truly satisfied in Christ alone. He is our true treasure.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for teaching me about where my heart should be and who my true treasure really is.

2. Jesus Christ, help me to live in the evidence of salvation at work in my life by growing to despise sin and honor holiness.

3. Holy Spirit, give me the strength to overcome any sinful habits of my old self and live in the new life that Jesus Christ has given me.

   
   

구원의 증거: 예수 그리스도 안에 거함

우리는 예수 그리스도를 주님과 구주로 영접함으로써 구원의 선물을 받습니다. 이로 인해 우리는 하나님의 자녀로 다시 태어나며, 우리의 존재와 정체성이 근본적으로 변화합니다. 아담과 하와를 통해 우리는 죄 가운데 태어났으며, 우리의 행위와 상관없이 본성적으로 타락한 상태에 있었습니다. 선한 삶을 살더라도 원죄로 인해 우리는 영원한 형벌을 피할 수 없었습니다. 우리의 본성은 어둠과 두려움 속에서 살아갈 수밖에 없었으며, 죽음의 지배를 받는 존재였습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도께서 십자가에서 우리의 죗값을 대신 치르심으로써, 우리의 죄악된 본성은 그분의 의로 대체되었습니다. 이제 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 인해 날마다 영원한 천국을 향해 나아가고 있습니다.

내가 구원을 받았음을 어떻게 알 수 있는가?

수련회나 부흥회에서 경험하는 영적 감동이나 감정적 해방감을 넘어, 이 질문에 대한 답을 아는 것은 신앙의 성숙을 위한 핵심 요소입니다. 우리의 신앙은 외적인 표현의 강도에 의해 결정되지 않으며, 오히려 내면의 변화로 증명됩니다. 물론 외적인 신앙 표현은 기쁨과 자유를 표현하며, 공동체를 격려하고, 진정한 예배를 형성하는 중요한 요소입니다. 그러나 내면의 변화 없이 외적인 표현만을 강조한다면, 신앙은 단순한 형식적인 행위나 자기 과시로 전락할 위험이 있습니다. 따라서 우리가 추구해야 할 영적 성숙은 사람들의 평가나 시선에 의해 좌우되는 것이 아니라, 하나님 앞에서 정직하게 살아가며 날마다 그분의 변화시키는 은혜에 순종하는 것입니다.

진정한 구원의 증거는 죄를 미워하고 거룩함을 사모하는 삶에서 드러납니다. 예수님께서는 니고데모와의 대화(요한복음 3:1-21)에서 거듭남의 개념을 설명하시며, 성령으로 다시 태어나야 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다. 성령 안에서 다시 태어난 우리는 하나님의 소유가 되었으며, 그분의 자녀로서 훈련받고 성장해야 합니다. 구원을 받았다고 해서 즉시 모든 죄성이 사라지는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 우리의 본질은 변화되어 죄가 낯설어지고, 거룩함이 우리의 본향이 됩니다.

하늘의 보물을 쌓는 삶

예수님께서는 우리가 이 땅에 재물을 쌓기보다 하늘에 보물을 쌓으라고 경고하셨습니다. 이는 단순히 물질적 재산을 포기하라는 의미가 아니라, 우리의 마음이 어디에 있는지를 점검하라는 의미입니다. 최근 아내와 함께 여러 곳을 여행하며 사역과 휴식을 병행하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 예전에는 낯선 환경 속에서 집을 그리워하며 향수병을 느끼곤 했습니다. 하지만 이번 여행에서는 그러한 감정을 거의 느끼지 않았습니다. 무엇이 변했을까요? 젊은 시절, 나에게 '집'이란 내 침대, 내 컴퓨터, 내 친구들, 그리고 익숙한 환경이 있는 장소였습니다. 그러나 지금은 '집'이란 내가 사랑하는 아내가 있는 곳이 되었습니다.

생각해 보십시오. 결혼이 진짜인 이유가 반지 때문일까요? 결혼식 드레스나 턱시도 때문일까요? 결혼식의 규모나 음식의 질 때문일까요? 아니면 웨딩 사진이 아름답게 나왔기 때문일까요? 아닙니다. 결혼이 진짜인 이유는 내 마음이 변했기 때문입니다. 기쁠 때나 어려울 때나, 부족할 때나 풍족할 때나, 내가 있는 환경과 상관없이 아내가 있는 곳이 곧 내 집이 되었습니다. 완벽한 남편은 아니지만, 결혼이 진짜임을 알 수 있는 이유는 계속해서 더 나은 남편이 되려 노력하기 때문입니다. 마찬가지로, 내가 예수 그리스도를 진정으로 영접했는지, 내가 진정으로 구원을 받았는지 아는 방법은 오직 하나입니다. 그것은 예수님이 나의 '집'이 되었는가 하는 것입니다. 주님과 함께할 때 평안을 느끼고, 주님과 멀어질 때 영적으로 갈급함을 느낀다면, 그것이야말로 구원의 증거입니다.

오직 예수님이 충분하신가?

우리가 잘못된 신호를 따라가면 교만과 의심의 광야에서 길을 잃게 됩니다. 어떤 이들은 신앙을 감정적 체험에 의존하며, 또 어떤 이들은 자신의 완벽함과 성공에 기초합니다. 감정적인 신앙을 가진 사람들은 강렬한 영적 체험이 없으면 믿음이 흔들리고, 완벽함을 기준으로 삼는 사람들은 스스로 거룩하지 못하다는 이유로 구원을 의심하게 됩니다. 그러나 진정한 구원의 증거는 이 두 가지 모두가 아닙니다. 참된 신앙은 오직 예수 그리스도가 내게 충분한가의 질문에서 답을 찾을 수 있습니다. 주님보다 더 중요한 것이 없고, 주님 안에서만 만족할 수 있다면, 우리는 진정한 믿음 안에 거하는 것입니다. 우리의 삶을 헛된 것들에 낭비하지 말고, 다시금 마음을 주님께로 향하게 합시다. 성령님께 부탁하여 우리의 심령이 오직 예수님 안에서 만족할 수 있도록 가르쳐 달라고 기도합시다. 예수님은 우리의 진정한 보물이십니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 저의 마음이 어디에 있어야 하는지를 가르쳐 주시고, 참된 보물이 누구인지 깨닫게 해 주셔서 감사합니다.

2. 예수님, 제가 죄를 미워하고 거룩함을 사랑하는 삶을 살도록 도와주소서.

3. 성령님, 저의 옛 습관과 죄성을 이길 힘을 주시고, 예수 그리스도 안에서 새로운 삶을 살게 하소서.
