Lent Day 12 [3.18.2025] / The Light of the World Pt. 2

Matthew 5:14 - You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Overview:

When we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the truth of His life, death, and resurrection changes our values, our priorities, and our perspectives. Before Jesus Christ, our lives were without hope or relief from darkness and death, but through Jesus Christ, we are given a truth and love that sets us free from condemnation. Now no one, not even ourselves can view and judge our lives as beyond saving because Jesus Christ has redeemed us with the finished work of the cross. He declares us forgiven, saved, loved, and accepted in His glory and eternity, and when we receive Him, we receive the true light that casts out the darkness.

The Light of the World:

With the truth and hope of Jesus Christ living within us, we are called to become the vessels that bring the light of Jesus Christ into the world. The bible first reminds us of this purpose by stating that a town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Jesus would have been referring to what was known as the ‘cities of refuge,’ or the ‘cities of intaking.’ These cities were constructed according to Exodus 21:12-14, Numbers 35:9-24, Deuteronomy 4:41-43, Joshua 20, and 1 Chronicles 6, as a temporary haven for those who had unintentionally committed manslaughter. Such people would flee to any one of these six cities that were situated throughout the land of Israel, geographically located so that no community would be more than a day’s journey away from one of the sites. These cities would provide a safe-keeping for those who had accidentally directly or indirectly caused the death of another, until they had been given an opportunity for a fair trial. Until such time and much after the trial, the city provided protection against any person(s) that may want to avenge the victim’s life and provided an opportunity for the accused to be rehabilitated.  

Imagine we were in the shoes of such an individual. Without our intent, we had caused the death of another because of a mistake we made or an accident we caused. This does not refer to those who intentionally murdered someone, but rather accidentally caused the death of another without intent. In other words, the victim also had not done anything to deserve even an affliction let alone death and was probably going about his or her day normally as a citizen of the city. Such an incident would cause sheer disbelief, unbearable guilt, heart-wrenching regret, and overwhelming despair. We would conclude that our lives are now over and forever bound in shame. In that moment, you look up and see a city that has been created for people just like you, a kind of place where for the longest time only other people who were unfortunate ended up going to. You may have even shook your head at them and pitied them at one point, and wondered what they deserved to be thrown into another life in this way; but now you have become that person, and with nowhere else to go, you make the day’s trip into that city. Here, you await your trial and are cleared of your crime, but are still riddled with guilt, so you are given a home and a plow, an opportunity to rebuild your life. And as time passes, you see the seasons change, the crops grow, those you once thought unfortunate become your neighbors, and life moves along. You arrived filled with regret and anger at how unfair life is, but soon enough you became a member of the city on a hill ready to receive and rehabilitate the next of the unfortunate.

Why does Jesus say that a city built on a hill cannot be hidden and that a lamp that is lit would never be placed under a bowl, but on a stand to give light to everyone in the house? Jesus is talking about His glorious plan in our lives. When we receive the light of Jesus Christ, we become that city and that lamp, but He does not hide us away, but rather establishes us on the top of the hill and on a stand for all the world to see His hope and glory. Just like a city on a hill is visible for miles and miles, and a lamp lights up the entire home, our purpose is to serve as a beacon to those in search of relief and a light to those in search of rest. Life is brutally unfair at times even to us, but with the truth and hope of Jesus Christ, we are called to serve others like as a city of refuge, a beacon of hope, and a signal of grace. And when life renders us burnt out and tired, do we serve those who are weary, as a lamp in a home that brings clarity and rest to those in need? We are called to be the safe haven, the reassurance of another chance, the proclamation of salvation and grace to all the world; and we are to shine this light of Jesus Christ boldly and passionately through the way we counsel, love, serve, and help those around us. God is providing us opportunities this lent season to be a light in someone’s life in a world that is broken, unfair, and uninviting. He is putting us on the hill and on a stand for someone in need to see His everlasting love and grace in the midst of their despair and darkness. We are simply called to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ through our words and actions so that His grace and glory would be on display through us.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for helping me realize that I am also in need of taking refuge in the city on a hill.

2. Jesus, teach me to trust in your grace and rebuild my life upon your truth and hope.

3. Holy Spirit, help me proclaim the light of Jesus Christ to all the world boldly and passionately.

예수 그리스도의 빛을 받다

우리가 예수 그리스도를 주님과 구주로 영접할 때, 그분의 삶과 죽음, 부활의 진리는 우리의 가치관, 우선순위, 그리고 관점을 변화시킵니다. 예수님을 만나기 전, 우리는 소망 없이 어둠과 죽음의 굴레 속에 있었지만, 그분을 통해 정죄로부터 자유롭게 되는 진리와 사랑을 받습니다. 이제 누구도—심지어 우리 자신조차도—우리의 삶을 구원받을 수 없는 존재로 여길 수 없습니다. 예수 그리스도께서 십자가에서 이루신 완전한 사역으로 우리를 구속하셨기 때문입니다. 그분은 우리를 용서하시고, 구원하시며, 사랑과 영원한 영광 속에 받아들이십니다. 예수님을 영접할 때, 우리는 어둠을 몰아내는 참된 빛을 받습니다.

세상의 빛이 되라

예수 그리스도의 진리와 소망이 우리 안에 살아계시기에, 우리는 그분의 빛을 세상에 비추는 역할을 감당해야 합니다. 성경은 "산 위에 세운 왕국이 숨겨지지 못할 것"(마태복음 5:14)이라고 말씀합니다. 예수님께서 이 말씀을 하셨을 때, 그분은 ‘도피성’(Refuge Cities)이라 불리는 특별한 성읍들을 염두에 두셨을 가능성이 큽니다. 이 성읍들은 출애굽기 21:12-14, 민수기 35:9-24, 신명기 4:41-43, 여호수아 20장, 역대상 6장에 따라, 의도치 않게 사람을 죽인 이들이 피할 수 있도록 지정되었습니다. 이 여섯 개의 도피성은 이스라엘 전역에 걸쳐 전략적으로 배치되어, 어느 공동체에서든 하루 안에 도달할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다. 그곳에서 피난자는 공정한 재판을 받을 기회를 얻고, 복수를 원하는 자들로부터 보호를 받으며, 새로운 삶을 시작할 수 있었습니다.

그런 상황을 상상해 보십시오. 우리가 의도치 않게 다른 사람의 죽음을 초래한 후, 극심한 죄책감과 절망 속에서 도망칠 곳을 찾고 있습니다. 마침내 멀리 언덕 위에 세워진 도시가 보입니다. 우리는 그곳을 향해 가며, 과거에는 그곳에 가야 하는 사람들을 안타까운 눈길로 바라봤던 자신을 떠올릴지도 모릅니다. 그러나 이제는 우리 자신이 그 사람이 되었습니다. 그 도시에 도착한 후 우리는 공정한 재판을 받고, 여전히 죄책감에 시달리지만, 새로운 삶을 살아갈 집과 밭을 받습니다. 계절이 바뀌고, 작물이 자라고, 이곳에 온 다른 이들과 이웃이 되어갑니다. 처음에는 불공평한 삶을 한탄하며 도착했지만, 결국은 새로운 희망 속에서 또 다른 누군가를 맞이할 준비가 됩니다.

예수님께서 "산 위에 세운 왕국이 숨겨지지 못할 것이며, 등불을 켜서 그릇 아래 두지 않고 등경 위에 두어 집 안 모든 사람에게 비추게 하리라"(마태복음 5:14-15)라고 말씀하신 이유가 무엇일까요? 이는 우리를 향한 하나님의 영광스러운 계획을 나타냅니다. 우리가 예수님의 빛을 받을 때, 하나님께서는 우리를 숨기지 않으시고, 도리어 세상에 빛을 비추는 등불로 세우십니다. 마치 산 위의 성읍이 멀리서도 선명하게 보이고, 등불이 온 집을 밝히듯, 우리의 목적은 삶의 무게에 짓눌린 이들에게 희망의 빛을 비추는 것입니다. 삶은 때때로 우리에게 가혹하지만, 우리는 예수 그리스도의 소망과 진리를 통해 도피성 같은 존재가 되어야 합니다. 또한, 삶이 우리를 지치게 할 때에도, 여전히 어둠 속에서 방황하는 이들을 위해 밝게 빛나야 합니다. 우리는 그들에게 안식과 위로를 제공하는 빛이 되어야 합니다.

하나님께서는 사순절을 맞이하여 우리에게 누군가의 삶 속에서 빛이 될 기회를 주고 계십니다. 세상은 부서지고, 불공평하며, 때로는 차갑지만, 하나님께서는 우리를 언덕 위에 두시고, 등경 위에 세우셔서 절망과 어둠 속에서도 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 비추게 하십니다. 우리는 말과 행동을 통해 예수님의 사랑과 소망을 나눔으로써, 하나님의 영광을 세상에 나타내도록 부름받았습니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 저 또한 산 위의 도피성으로 피난해야 하는 존재임을 깨닫게 해주셔서 감사합니다.

2. 예수님, 저를 당신의 은혜 안에서 새롭게 하시고, 진리와 소망 위에 삶을 세워갈 수 있도록 도와주소서.

3. 성령님, 제가 세상 가운데 담대하고 열정적으로 예수 그리스도의 빛을 선포할 수 있도록 이끌어 주소서.
