Scripture: Matthew 4:2-11 /

Genesis 3:19 - By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.
Genesis 3:19 - By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

Overview:

Immediately following His baptism, Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. Remembering the words of Jesus to John the Baptist prior to this scripture (Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness) gives us insight to understand how the testing of Jesus was also within the will of God His father in Heaven. Many times, we believe that our testing comes from our wrongdoings as a punishment for our crimes; however, the grace of Jesus Christ rests on the identity and workings of the gospel, instead of our performance. Therefore, our season of testing that is marked by suffering, doubt, and questioning is an intentional gift of God to make room for our repentance but more importantly the ultimate display of His power, glory, love, and faithfulness.

The Significance of Ash Wednesday:

Ash Wednesday begins our season of lent leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Ash had great significance in the Old Testament and would be present in various circumstances regarding repentance, preparation, and grief. The sprinkling of ash over one’s head is a deep reminder of our transient and fragile nature, reminding us deeply that we were once made from dust and will return to dust. As important as is this first truth, the greater message of Jesus Christ reminds us that the love of Jesus Christ grants an incredible life in our time here on earth, but also eternal life for those who would believe in Him. We remember on this day the humility of Jesus Christ, that despite being the Son of God and sinless in every way, He submitted Himself to the will of the Father, and therefore submitted Himself to be tested in the wilderness. We too are to begin our lent journey reflecting Jesus’ humility and in reflection of His great life, journey, death and resurrection for us.

Prayer Topic:

  1. Lord, I surrender my life to you and willingly enter the next forty days with a desire to be tested and convicted under your sovereignty and plan.

  2. On this Ash Wednesday, I recognize again how sinful, broken, and meaningless my life is without Jesus Christ.

  3. I want take this time to repent for my sins and humble myself again before you, Jesus. May you have mercy on me and establish me in your love and grace.

  4. Holy Spirit, I ask for strength and wisdom during this 40-day journey, that I would grow closer to You and stronger in my faith.
