Luke 1:1-25 / 누가복음 1:1-25 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
Who was Luke?
Not only through his writings in both the gospel of Luke and in the book of Acts (Acts of the Apostles), but also through biblical references, we know that Luke had a high level of education and was a practicing physician (Colossians 4:14). His writings reflect his detail and research-oriented disposition by exhibiting extensive historical and medical awareness regarding the events of and around Jesus Christ. Uniquely, Luke is the only non-Jewish or Gentile author in the New Testament and personally traveled with the apostle Paul on his missionary journeys. In many ways, the character and reputation of Luke precedes and adds credibility to his writings not only through internal consistency but also through his character and proximity to the events. Luke was a physician, well-educated, research-oriented, and deeply faithful and loyal as a companion; and for such a unique writer we must wonder what his perspective and purpose in writing the gospel of Luke might have been.
The Prophetic Starting Point
While the gospel rests on the identity, works, and life of Jesus Christ, Luke decides to begin his writing by investigating and presenting the situation of John the Baptist’s birth. While there are over 300 Messianic Prophecies regarding the coming of Jesus Christ, all such prophecies are prefaced by and signaled by a former prophecy regarding one who would come before Jesus to set the stage for Him.
Isaiah 40:3 – A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’
Malachi 3:1 – I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me…
Historically and chronologically speaking, Luke rightly brings attention to the story of John the Baptist’s birth before recounting the birth of Jesus Christ. Not only did the conception of John the Baptist happen prior to the conception of Jesus Christ, but the identity of who God declared John the Baptist would serve as the greatest beacon and announcement that the Savior of the world had come.
The Circumstances of John’s Birth
There was a priest named Zechariah who had a wife named Elizabeth. Both Zechariah and Elizabeth were descendants of prominent priests or priest families and were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. Yet, they remained barren and childless until they had eventually given up all together because of old age. One day when Zechariah was tending to the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and prophesied that he would have a son. Zechariah falls into disbelief to which the angel of the Lord provides a radical sign: Zechariah would be unable to speak until the day that John is born. Sure enough, when Zechariah had completed his service in the temple and returned home, his wife became pregnant with his child whom the Lord had promised to provide.
Who was John the Baptist?
The angel of the Lord describes John the Baptist as one who will be great in the sight of the Lord. He would be filled with the Holy Spirit even before being born and bring back many of the people of Israel to God. We know that he would dedicate his life to preaching a message of repentance not only by his words but also through his lifestyle. His clothes were made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, eating locusts and wild honey, fulfilling a single great prophecy that would serve to be the greatest revelation that would set the stage for Jesus Christ. All the while, the Lord had not abandoned Elizabeth’s womb but reserved it to establish the great stage on which Jesus would bring salvation to the world. Zechariah and Elizabeth went from despair and resignation to bearing one of the greatest prophets to ever walk the earth.
God Grants Certainty
Why would God wait until Zechariah and Elizabeth were well beyond child-bearing age to miraculously provide them with a child? To the apostle Luke, the entirety of this situation was a medical catastrophe. Not only was conception impossible, but a child at this age would provide for a plethora of medical complications. So, why would God wait until this moment to open Elizabeth’s womb? God’s purpose is to provide certainty. Upon revealing His great plan through the angel Gabriel to Zechariah, scripture tells us that Zechariah doubted and did not believe in the words of the angel; because of this, the angel of the Lord would render Zechariah mute until John would be born. The purpose of this aligns with God’s purpose regarding the parental circumstance of John’s birth: to provide certainty and extinguish doubt. The impossibility of the circumstance rules out any law of humanity, nature, and fortune, directly providing the certainty of God’s hand and provision. Furthermore, despite all the medical complications and risks, Elizabeth would bear a healthy and strong child, providing yet more evidence that this is a miracle from God.
Conclusion
Is there something you had deeply hoped to see change or appear in your life but have yet to receive it? This story tells us that God builds certainty of His love, provision, and great purpose in our lives by first building impossibility. So, when that which you had hoped in so deeply is finally granted, we would have certainty in knowing that it was not because of our good words or luck that such a thing has finally appeared. It could only be God. The call today is to trust in God with the impossible and silence the doubts and despair that so easily slip through our lips. When we examine the character, love, and power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, like Zechariah, our doubts are silenced and our hearts willing to wait with anticipation as God accomplishes the impossible in our lives. That which seems out of reach, are just the parts of our lives that God is reserving to overcome the impossible.
Reflection:
1. Is there something you hoped would change or appear in your life but now feels out of reach?
2. Why does this circumstance now feel impossible to you?
3. How can I surrender this hope to God and trust that He is only reserving this part of my life for greater things?
