Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. - John 4:23

Scripture: John 4:1-26

Conviction is different from guilt and shame. Jesus calls us into repentance through conviction rather than condemnation by presenting absolute truth that saves rather than abandoning us in shame. When Jesus speaks with the Samaritan woman, there was already reason for conviction because of this radical action. As a Jewish Rabbi, speaking publicly with a woman who is also a Samaritan was socially risky and cause for humiliation; however, not only does Jesus overcome barriers, but even initiates the encounter. Jesus teaches her that everyone who drinks from this well will be thirsty again, but one who receives the water that He gives will never thirst again. They would have within them the source of water that would never run dry, welling up with eternal life. The woman asks Jesus for this water to which Jesus tells her to come back with her husband. When she says that she has no husband, Jesus uncovers her broken living and the real reason why she came to the well in the heat of day to avoid interaction with others: her shame. Jesus does not condemn or abandon her or even tell her how to fix her immoral living; rather, Jesus calls her to receive new life and overcomes her shame with invitation.

When we think of the social parameters of an invitation, there is a sense of responsibility and promise involved. The one who invites a guest implies that time would be spent together, the home would be clean, and food would be provided. The guest has the responsibility to show up, but the host has the responsibility to provide. In other words, only a fool would invite a guest without measuring the cost of preparation. When Jesus invites this woman into a new life, He does not tell her to fix her life and rid herself of sin before coming. Jesus knows who she is and that she has no power in cleansing herself. However, He also knows the cost of that invitation and has made all preparations in advance for her to be made new. Jesus has extended this same invitation to us. This is not a moral standard, but an invitation to receive Jesus and never thirst again. Conviction is an invitation into a new and powerful living, but shame is the accusation of the enemy that seeks to throw us into chaos and hopelessness. We are called to listen to our convictions rather than submit to our shame.

Reflection:

1.     What conversation, what change, or what action has the Holy Spirit convicted our heart in?

2.     Why have we not yet obeyed this conviction?

3.     How can we trust in God with these convictions?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for teaching me about the difference between conviction and shame. I no longer want to live in shame but have the courage to live according to the convictions of the Holy Spirit. Help me to be strong and trust in you with where you are leading my heart. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

(Reflection)

(Prayer)
