The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. - John 3:29

Scripture: John 3:22-36

With the start of Jesus’ ministry, John the Baptist’s opening act comes to an end. In our scripture today, an argument develops between John’s disciples and Jews over the matter of ceremonial washing. The content of the argument stemmed from John’s unconventional ministry into Jesus’ uptake of not only John’s baptism tradition but also John’s followers. To this, John reminds his followers that the bride belongs to the bridegroom, not the friend who attends the ceremony. Rather, the friend waits, listens, and rejoices at the bridegroom’s voice and now his joy is complete.

From beginning to end, John’s life has been a platform for the Messiah so the world would be ready to believe and receive salvation. He stood in at the turning point of history and faithfully preached under political and religious pressure. John did not perform any miracles or demonstrate any spiritual prophecy or sign, and yet Jesus describes John in Matthew 11:11 and Luke 7:28 as the greatest prophet born of women. John’s ministry was powerful because no other prophet pointed to Jesus so closely and completely. Jesus continues to honor John by claiming that whoever is least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he, highlighting John’s absolute devotion and submission to Jesus Christ. The greatest life is one that most clearly portrays Jesus Christ to the world.

Reflection:

1.     How does our life serve as a platform to display Jesus’ love?

2.     How can we continue to humble ourselves like John the Baptist for the purposes of the Kingdom of God?

Prayer:

Dear God, help me to become more like John the Baptist. Let my life become a platform to display Jesus’ love to the world, that He would become greater and I would become less. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
