Lent Day 13 [3.4.2026] Honoring Our Father In Heaven

By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. - John 5:30

Scripture: John 5:16-30

The Jewish leaders began to persecute Jesus after His claim to divine sonship with God. According to them, Jesus had broken the Jewish laws and spoken blasphemy against God. Yet Jesus spoke clearly and powerfully on the nature of His relationship with His Father in Heaven that provides the perfect platform and assurance of the gospel that adopts us as sons and daughters of God.

Jesus proclaims firstly that He and the Father are one. They are distinct, yet perfectly unified in purpose, action, and thought so much so that one cannot honor God while dishonoring Jesus, and the one who accepts Jesus also accepts God in their heart. Secondly, Jesus claims that the authority over life and death has been given to the Son by the Father. In this way, Jesus grants eternal life to those who would receive and believe in Him. Finally, Jesus reveals that His power comes from His Father in Heaven and from the desire to please God.

When we receive Jesus, we also receive God; however, when we dishonor Jesus, we also dishonor God. In this way, we cannot claim that we know God and worship Him, when we do not live according to Jesus’ ministry and life. God has given Jesus the authority over life and death, and eternal life is only found in Him. Moreover, Jesus lived a life according to the power that comes from the desire to please His Father in Heaven. When we receive Jesus, we proclaim our association and commitment to follow Him. If His life’s purpose was to please God, then His life is the key to our faith. There are many times that living like Jesus is difficult. Jesus speaks of His purpose and identity in the face of persecution and adversity, and many times we find so many reasons to live apart from Jesus’ teachings and example. However, the true power of our lives and our faith comes from the overwhelming desire to please our Father in Heaven regardless of the challenges and obstacles before us. Jesus’ words affirm the source of our power and our purpose in life: to be a pleasing offering to God.

1.     How can we live like Jesus and be a pleasing offering to God?

2.     How does our adoption as children of God give us the courage to live out our faith boldly?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you that through the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, I can call you my Father in Heaven. I know all good things come from you. Please help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

유대 지도자들은 예수님께서 하나님과의 신적 부자(父子) 관계를 주장하신 후부터 예수님을 박해하기 시작했습니다. 그들은 예수님이 유대 율법을 어기고 하나님을 모독했다고 여겼습니다. 그러나 예수님은 하늘에 계신 아버지와의 관계의 본질을 분명하고 담대하게 선포하셨고, 이는 우리를 하나님의 아들과 딸로 입양하시는 복음의 확신을 보여 주는 완전한 토대가 됩니다.

예수님은 첫째로, 자신과 아버지께서 하나이심을 선포하십니다. 두 분은 구별되시지만 목적과 행동과 뜻에 있어 완전한 연합을 이루고 계시기에, 예수님을 공경하지 않으면서 하나님을 공경할 수 없습니다. 또한 예수님을 영접하는 자는 마음으로 하나님도 영접하는 것입니다.

둘째로, 예수님은 생명과 죽음에 대한 권세가 아버지께로부터 아들에게 주어졌다고 말씀하십니다. 그래서 예수님은 그분을 영접하고 믿는 자들에게 영원한 생명을 주십니다.

마지막으로, 예수님은 자신의 능력이 하늘에 계신 아버지께로부터 오며, 아버지를 기쁘시게 하려는 뜻에서 나온다고 밝히십니다.

우리가 예수님을 영접하면 하나님도 영접하는 것이지만, 예수님을 모욕하거나 공경하지 않으면 하나님도 공경하지 않는 것이 됩니다. 그러므로 예수님의 사역과 삶을 따라 살지 않으면서 “나는 하나님을 안다, 하나님을 예배한다”라고 말할 수 없습니다. 하나님께서는 예수님께 생명과 죽음에 대한 권세를 주셨고, 영원한 생명은 오직 예수님 안에서만 찾을 수 있습니다. 또한 예수님은 하늘 아버지를 기쁘시게 하려는 마음에서 오는 능력으로 살아가셨습니다.

우리가 예수님을 영접한다는 것은 그분과의 연합을 선포하며, 그분을 따르겠다는 헌신을 고백하는 것입니다. 예수님의 삶의 목적이 아버지를 기쁘시게 하는 것이었다면, 예수님의 삶은 곧 우리의 믿음의 열쇠입니다. 하지만 예수님처럼 사는 일은 종종 어렵습니다. 예수님께서는 박해와 대적 속에서도 자신의 목적과 정체성을 선포하셨는데, 우리도 많은 이유를 들어 예수님의 가르침과 본을 따라 살지 못할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 삶과 믿음의 진정한 능력은, 어떤 도전과 장애물 앞에서도 하늘 아버지를 기쁘시게 하려는 압도적인 열망에서 나옵니다. 예수님의 말씀은 우리의 능력의 근원과 삶의 목적을 분명히 합니다. 바로 하나님께 기쁨이 되는 산 제물로 살아가는 것입니다.

묵상:

1.     어떻게 하면 예수님처럼 살며 하나님께 기쁨이 되는 제물로 살아갈 수 있을까요?

2.     우리가 하나님의 자녀로 입양되었다는 사실은 어떻게 우리의 믿음을 담대하게 살아가게 하나요?

기도:

하나님, 예수 그리스도의 보혈과 희생을 통해 제가 하나님을 하늘에 계신 아버지라 부를 수 있게 하심을 감사합니다. 모든 좋은 것이 하나님께로부터 오는 줄 믿습니다. 제 삶이 하나님께 기쁨이 되도록 도와주세요. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
