Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. - John 4:36
Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. - John 4:36

Scripture: John 4:27-42

Jesus orchestrates this encounter with the Samaritan woman so that she would become the first messenger of the good news to the Samaritans. This woman was shunned by her own people and defeated in shame; yet Jesus chooses her to display the full redemption and radical nature of His work and purpose. When this Samaritan went to go and tell the people about Jesus, she left behind her water jar. She had come in the heat of day desperate for a drink but had received true living water that would change her life forever. This jar that had been left behind represents how Jesus had broken the cycle of shame and restored her socially and spiritually. She ran back to bring her entire town to meet the Messiah they had all been waiting for.

Meanwhile, the disciples urged Jesus to eat something to which Jesus replies that He has a different food to eat. This food became apparent in verse 35, which most likely portrays Jesus pointing to the group of Samaritans on their way to meet Him. Samaritans traditionally wore light or white garments, and their white clothing would have looked like grain in a field ready for harvest. Jesus points in their direction, claiming that He has not come for the physical harvest, rather the spiritual one that is ripe. All those who came before the disciples had planted and sowed the will of God in the hearts of many and now the disciples would be stepping into God’s bigger story. The joy of those who had sown would be made complete in those who would come to reap the harvest. The long-awaited Messiah had come and now through Jesus, the hope of salvation, eternal life, and redemption was made complete.

The weight of our mission and purpose is often overlooked, but Jesus brings our attention to how important our faith stands in the present day. When we follow Jesus, we are entering into a historical and eternal timeline with prophets such as Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and David. We are intertwining our lives with the message of Jesus Christ Himself so that through us, what has been sowed would not spoil but would be harvested for the completion of the work that others had done before us. The harvest season is upon us for just like how the Samaritans in white garments visually resembled a ripe field, the world is ripe to receive the complete and transformative message of the gospel.

Reflection:

1.     Is there someone in your life that has not accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior?

2.     What is keeping you from sharing your faith with them?

3.     How can you find motivation and courage to share your faith with others through love?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your magnified work that includes my life in such prestige and honor. I want to be courageous in reaping the harvest that have been faithfully planted by many before me. Help my faith be the completion of their joy and hope that the whole world would come to accept Jesus Christ in their heart. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
